A Look Back At The Golden Age Of Racism………….

Ah…the good old days…..when everybody had all of their hate cards right on the table for the world to see. Do you see this silly little picture? If published, SOMEBODY SOMEWHERE would have their little Irish pug-nose out of joint…OOOPS! That was racist wasn’t it? Today, let me share some of the classics with you……

Back in the day newspapers and magazine’s could publish anything they wanted without fear of protests, boycotts or the wrath of those who make their livings being offended. Good times indeed. Some of the best racists this country have ever produced have been of Irish ancestry. How DID they get so good at it? Well, lets see how they learned….

This one’s called “The Day We Celebrate”. Note the monkey like faces on the Irish as they raise a glass and celebrate by beating the crap out of a cop and each other. Actually this one isn’t that far off the mark and if you don’t believe me, come down to St. Brendan’s day in Long Beach next month and have a “look see”……..

In this one we see the classic simian face with a hat that says “Anarchy”. Simple and elegant and right to the point. Left unchecked, this flow of Irish ape men will destroy our society and anarchy will reign!

Here we see the Irish slicing up the Democratic Party in league with the Church, taking all of the spoils for themselves. This one has the ape man, clay pipe, AND we get a shot at Catholics too!

This one I believe came early on in the Irish infestation of America. The blacks (no, I’m not saying African-American to please you…) were already a well established group to hate, but back then they kind of knew their place right? So what you want to do is equate the recent arivals to a group you have already put down and also demonstrate the superiority of the Anglo-European.

In this one, it appears a zoo used Irish names to name all of the monkeys. It must have resulted in some kind of pushback from someone….the caption points out that the use of Irish names was more offensive to the monkeys. Actually, that’s kind of funny…..

This one is called “Contrasted Faces” and compares Florence Nightengale to Bridget McBruiser……this speaks for itself, I mean, have you met any Irish women before?

Here’s one that has gotten a lot of mileage since this was published. It’s called “Everybody Works But Father”. Attacking the manhood of a group is a no brainer, this one can be used over and over and over……

I’m not sure what to make of this one. It looks like the dainty Anglo-Saxon is having a little trouble with the domestic help. Note the ape face, large feet and lovely shamrock pattern on the dress…..

One of my FAVORITES! You may not be able to read the caption but it says “The Mortar Of Assimilation — And The One Element That Won’t Mix”. Now who would that be clinging to their old ways??????

This one needs no explanation; the south had it’s problem, and so did the north.

So that was a little taste of the good old days. Fortunately the Irish prevailed and are fully assimilated…..with their drinking problems, propensity for violence, ape faces and women with large feet….

I was wondering if you would mind saying where you got some of your images. I found most of them in other sources, but I am especially interested in the Irish slicing up the Democratic Party. Is it a Harper’s Weekly image?
    thanks

    • Hi Omzr. One of the perils of stealing material from other people while you’re drunk and posting things on a blog to amuse your friends is that you don’t always remember the source. I’m sure I stole it after googling irish Racist Cartoons or something; I seem to remember it may have had a title “Killing The Golden Goose” and I think it was from 1878….maybe….?

The image you refer to is by Thomas Nast. HarpWeek maintains an extensive library
